Area pianists display talents at recitals
Two
seniors — Elizabeth Zielins and Jonathan Costa, graduating from YHS
in June — were presented in a Senior Piano recital by their teacher,
Catherine Walker of Yosemite Lakes Park, on April 17.
The event was held at Fresno Piano, Fresno.
Sielins has been taking piano lessons since the age of 5, the last
four years being from Ms. Walker.
Costa began studying the piano at 11 with Sheila Adams and transferred
later to Ms. Walker.
Both are talented musicians, who shared their ability with friends
and family in this recital. They played favorites by Bach, Beethoven,
Brahms, Chopin, Liszt and Schubert, as well as popular songs by Andrew
Lloyd Weber and Scott Joplin.
Their performance ended with a pair of two-piano numbers by Bach and
Milhaud.
Both have demonstrated their versatility by accompanying for Yosemite
High School choral groups.
They have won Superior awards at Music Teachers Association events.
Among them are Certificate of Merit and Celebration.
Costa was a Fresno winner in the Bach Festival in January. He will
compete at the state level in May.
Both he and Zielins will play two solos each, as well as the two-piano
duets, on Saturday [April 30] in the Music Teachers Association Competition,
featuring top-notch pianists from the general Fresno area.
Elizabeth plays for the early service at Oakhurst Lutheran Church,
and Costa is the pianist at Christ Church Episcopal. They plan to
study the piano in college.
The recital will be repeated on Sunday [May 1] at 2 p.m. in the Oakhurst
Lutheran Church.
