For
the 10th time in the school’s history, Yosemite High School has received
the Ginsburg Award for athletic excellence.
The award is given to the school in the league that accumulates the
most points in varsity sports throughout the school year. YHS ended
the year with 308 points followed by Kingsburg with 250. YHS is in
the North Sequoia League.
For each varsity sports, points are given ranging from 24 for first
place to one for eighth place.
YHS Athletic Director Tom Fiormonti said the school led in points
at the end of the fall, winter and spring seasons.
“This is a real tribute to the coaches and athletes,” he said. “It
shows dedication and hard work.”
He said the key to the school’s winning the trophy was that the Badgers
always finished close to the top even when they didn’t win first place
in league. “It shows a consistency in the sports program,” he said.
In fall sports, the girls’ cross country team placed first, football
tied for first, volleyball placed second, girls’ golf placed second,
girls’ tennis placed fourth and boys’ cross country placed sixth.
In winter sports, girls’ basketball placed first, girls’ soccer tied
for first, boys’ soccer placed third, wrestling was fourth and boys’
basketball was seventh.
In the spring, boys’ track placed first, the baseball team tied for
first, softball was second, girls’ track was second, girls’ swimming
tied for second, boys’ swimming was third, boys’ tennis was fifth
and boys’ golf was fifth.
YHS won the trophy for six years straight from 1984-85 through 1989-90
and then for three more years from 1991-92 through 1993-94.
“It’s just awesome for the school to win the trophy again,” Fiormonti
said.
