Blood drive set for Yosemite High April 19

Members of the community can participate in the blood drive to be held on Tuesday, April 19.

The drive will take place in the Yosemite High School’s wrestling room from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Donors will receive a commemorative T-shirt, plus a variety of discounts from Valley businesses for dining, entertainment, recreation and services.

“This month the days are longer. That can mean more time to go out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Before you do that, please visit a Central California Blood Center near you and give blood,” said Chris Sorensen, director of community relations and development for the Blood Center.

“With more people outdoors, the number of accidents on and off the road can increase; increasing the need for blood,” he continued.
“We really need not only our regular donors to come out, but first-time donors as well.”

Blood donation requires less than an hour to complete. Donors must be in good general health, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be at least 17.

Senior citizens are encouraged to donate; there is no upper age limit.
Donors must eat a good meal and drink plenty of water within four hours before their donation.

The donors may give blood every eight weeks, the length of time it take the body to replace a pint of blood. A Social Security number is required for registration.

First-time donors also must present photo identification upon registration.

The Central California Blood Center, being the sole provider of blood and blood products for the 31 hospitals in Madera, Mariposa, Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties, must collect about 5,000 to 6,000 pints of blood each month to meet the needs of the region.
