Yosemite Adult Education offers a variety of classes
CPR class offered at YHS

A wide variety of classes will begin during September through the Yosemite Adult Education Program. A schedule of classes has been mailed to all residents of the area and information is also available on the Yosemite Joint Union High School District Web site, www.yosemiteuhsd.com or by calling the YAE office at (559) 683-8801 ext. 303.

Mail-in registration is in progress now and walk-in registration will begin Thursday, Sept. 2, between 4 and 8 p.m. at the Adult Education Office on the Yosemite High School campus.
These fee-based classes are open to all adults in the area.
The following classes will begin in September:

Chi-tu-do
Chi-tu-do will begin Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the YHS wrestling room; cost is $75. This is a 10-week course taught by credentialed Black Belt instructors and Masters. Four different types of martial arts will be taught: Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Escrima and Kung Fu. Students will work with weapons, learn competition level sparring, heavy bags, breaking and target work and on-the-ground self-defense.

EMT
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic begins Saturday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room at YHS; cost is $125. This class prepares students for certification as an EMT I. A ride-along ambulance program and emergency room observation section are added to this course for certification purposes. Twelve labs are available throughout the course on Wednesday evenings; students are required to attend four lab classes. The fee includes textbook, workbook and the lab required for the class.

Concert band
The Oakhurst Community Concert Band class starts Monday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the band room at YHS; there is no cost for this class which is open to everyone. Basic musical skills are important for successful participation, notes Randy Hyatt, director. For more information, call Hyatt at (559) 683-4667 ext. 243.

Art
Art I, Beginning Watercolor begins Monday, Sept. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Oakhurst Sierra Senior Center; cost is $75. This 10-week class is for beginning and novice levels. Students will learn the basic techniques of watercolor. Lab time will be used for the student to work on their own paintings and to learn from the instructor. A background knowledge of drawing skills is required. Students must provide their own supplies and equipment; a supply list will be given in class. The class is limited to 15 students.

Art II
Art II, Novice and Intermediate Watercolor begins Monday, Sept. 13, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Oakhurst Sierra Senior Center; cost is $75. This 10-week course is for novice and intermediate levels; background knowledge of drawing skills is required. Students will use this as a lab time to work on their own paintings and to learn from the instructor. Contents of the class will include composition, value, color, painting techniques and perspective. Students must provide their own supplies and equipment; a supply list will be given in class. The class is limited to 15 students.

Quickbooks Professional
Using Quickbooks Professional will be held Monday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Computer Lab 31 at YHS; cost is $30. Quick Books Pro is an accounting software package designed to run small to medium size companies. During this five-week course, students will learn to set up a company, to process payroll, pay quarterly taxes, pay vendors, write journal entries and use the report writer to generate various financial reports.

Adobe Photoshop
Beginning Adobe Photoshop CS begins Monday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Computer Lab 32 at YHS; cost is $30. This is a beginning level digital photography Photoshop class but is not a class for a novice computer user. The five-week course will help students know the work area, to work with selections, learn layer basics, learn painting and editing, and to work with Masks and Channels.

Prepared Childbirth Education
Prepared Childbirth Education begins Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Evergreen High School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; cost is $55 per couple. This six-week class includes physical and emotional preparation for birth including comfort measures, breathing and relaxation. Newborn care, breast-feeding and Cesarean birth are also covered. Review couples are welcome. The instructor reminds students to wear comfortable clothing and to take two pillows.

Adobe Illustrator
Beginning Adobe Illustrator CS begins Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Computer Lab 32 at YHS; cost is $30. This five-week class will teach students about the work area, creating basic shapes, painting and drawing with the pen tool and working with brushes. They will learn to design features for logos, business cards, banners, calendars, maps and brochures.

Introduction to the Internet
Introduction to the Internet will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Foothill High School on Yosemite Springs Parkway in Coarsegold; cost is $20. The class will teach students about the Internet, how to go on-line and what to do once they are there. E-mail will also be covered.

Investing Basics
Investing Basics begins Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 23 at YHS; cost is $40. This six-week class covers certificates of deposit (CDs), stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) and the 401K.

Introduction to PC
Introduction to PC will be held Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Computer Lab 31 at YHS; cost is $20. This is a class for the beginner, teaching students to turn on the computer, use a mouse and use the computer.

Buying and Selling on Ebay
Buying and Selling on Ebay starts Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Computer Lab 32 at YHS; cost is $30. This three-week course will teach students how to buy and sell on Ebay. Instruction will be given on setting up an account, listing an item and making a sale. The course will also cover how to buy, how to bid and provide tips on increasing profits, making efficient sales and how to have a higher win percentage. The course will also cover advanced search tips and the use of PayPal.

Beginning Word
Beginning Word will be start Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon in Computer Lab 31 at YHS; cost is $20. This two-week course will cover the features of Word, which is word processing software. The class is recommended for the beginner or those who have limited experience on the computer.

Introduction to the Internet
Introduction to the Internet will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon in Computer Lab 32 at YHS; cost is $20. The class will teach students about the Internet, how to go on-line and what to do once they are there. E-mail will also be covered.

Beginning ESL
Beginning ESL (English as a Second Language) started Aug. 25 and will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through Dec. 15; there is no cost.
This course is designed for adult ESL students to learn to communicate in everyday situations and to build a larger vocabulary through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. (Este curso es designado para adultos de ingles como segunda idioma para poder comunicar en situciones diarias de la vida y tambien para aumentar el vocabulario por medio de actividades de escuchar, hablar, leer e escribir en ingles.)

Adaptive Physical
Education

Adaptive Physical Education began meeting Sunday, Aug. 22 and will continue through Dec. 12 on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Harry Baker Gym at YHS; cost is $40. This 14-week course is designed to provide the physically challenged an opportunity to improve their mobility skills through exercise, walking and running and athletic sports.
This is a continuation of the previous adaptive physical education courses with an emphasis on basketball and softball.

 

A cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid class will be held at Yosemite High School Monday, Sept. 13, and Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 10 p.m.; cost is $25. The course will include lecture, demonstration, mannequin practice and testing.
