Steven Daniels,
who recently won the Bass Lake Lions Club speech contest, will compete
in the Zone contest with the winners of other Lions Clubs in the
mountain area on March 10 at 7 p.m.
Steven and his other competitors, Landon Grossi and Domenic Di Tomaso,
were so well-prepared and were such gifted speakers that they made
it very difficult for the judges to decide upon a winner. This was
the first time in the club’s history that the score sheets had to
be reviewed at the third level of competition.
It was obvious to the listeners that the students’ coach, Nicole
Ullrich, had helped to prepare these students well for this competition.
The judges for this competition were Jean and Al Bierfreund and
Les and Camellia Brincefield.
The following quote is from Bob Hansen, who is the chairman of the
2003-2004 Council of Governors Lions Student Speakers Contest: “This
is the 67th Multiple District Four Students Speakers Contest for
the youth of California and Nevada. Each year this contest gives
students an opportunity to expand their research, organizational
and speaking skills while building self-confidence and esteem. Every
group of people around the glove, large or small, lives by some
form of government. These governments have provided a variety of
benefits and restriction to their citizenry and the world community
has viewed each differently. This note and the volatile conditions
today be the question, ‘Democracy — is it for everyone?’ This is
the subject of the Student Speakers’ Contest this year that we feel
will give our youth an opportunity to bring forward a variety of
exciting and thought provoking views on government in general and
democracy in particular.”
The Lions presented Steven with a check for $50 for winning the
competition at the club level. Domenic and Landon each received
$25. The winner of the Zone contest will receive a check for $75.
At the Regional level the winner will receive $125. Once the speakers
get to the District level all sixteen winners will receive a $4,000
scholarship. The next, and second-to-last level, the four winners
will each receive a $6,500 scholarship. The winner of the Multiple
District Four contest will receive a $10,000 scholarship. The Bass
Lake Lions Club have been very proud to have been part of this process.
