The arts building at Yosemite High School now has a new name.

At the July meeting of the Yosemite Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees, members of the board unanimously agreed to name Building 300, which houses the high school’s art and home economics programs, the Jane and Jack Gyer Building.

The idea was proposed to the board by Bill McCabe, district superintendent.

“They are both extraordinary individuals who have contributed so much to our community in the way of community service, education, the arts and history, every facet in the community,” McCabe said.

“Jack was the editor and publisher of the Sierra Star when the district was formed and played a key role in informing the community of what was happening.

“Jane worked at the Star at that time as well. They have both been closely involved in the school.”

Jane Gyer, best known for her elaborate watercolors of Yosemite, died June 1.

Jack Gyer attended the July meeting when the board approved the naming of the building.

“He was speechless and it’s not often you see Jack Gyer speechless,” said Priscilla Pike, chairperson of the board. “He was very touched by it and said he wished Jane was here.”

Also located in Building 300 is the Badger Gallery.

Yosemite High art teachers include Rivka Schaffner and Carol Hendrickson, while the home economics teacher is Linda Heinbach.
