Linda Heinbach, home economics and Careers in Education teacher at Yosemite High School, was honored recently with the Yosemite Joint Union High School District Golden Apple Award.

The award is given each year to a person who has been especially helpful to a district and its students.

Heinbach was recognized for her work with Sober Graduation.

For the past 10 years she has been instrumental in planning the event for seniors following graduation.

She works on her own time to plan for the event, including food, games and gifts.

YHS Principal Steve Raupp noted that Heinbach volunteers her time for numerous community events, including Relay For Life, Kids Day, Change Bandits to benefit Children’s Hospital of Central California, and various Rotary events.

The Golden Apple awards program is through the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Mariposa / Madera County Charter.

Heinbach and recipients from other districts in the area were honored at a dinner May 10 in Madera.

One senior from each high school is also recognized during the dinner and receives a $500 scholarship.

Alexander Cano was the YHS recipient.
Cano is an International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement student at YHS. He is also involved in athletics. One of his recent honors was receiving the Coach’s Award for the varsity baseball team in 2003. He was on the Central Sequoia League All-Academic Team for Basketball and for Baseball in 2003.

Cano has been a winner in the Lions Club speakers contest and he won first place for web page design in Madera County History Day in 2002.
He volunteers his time for such events as Relay For Life, Challenge Day, church activities and the Spanish Club’s trip to Mexico.

He was coach for the Special Education softball team in 2002.

He is a valedictorian in the YHS Class of 2004.
