Fred Worstein, Yosemite track star, sets his sights on winning the state
championship in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
“I want to thank head
coach, Walker Vaughn, for the time he has spent with me. I also appreciate
the fans that have supported my efforts,” said Fred Worstein, the track
phenomenon at Yosemite High.
Worstein qualified for the state finals in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
As a freshman, he qualified for the state finals in the 200 meters. This
was an amazing feat in itself. This year he ran the second-fastest time
in the state in the 100 with a time of 10.57. The fastest time in the
state was run by Berrek Jones from Long Beach Poly High School. His time
was 10.44. He did not qualify for the 200 meters. Worstein’s best time
in the 200 is 21.39, wind aided.
This is one of the best times in the state. “The 200 is my best event.
I’m a strong finisher. I am usually behind in the first part of the race,
although we are working on my starting techniques,” stated Fred. The finals
are being held at Cerritos College on June 6 and 7. Cerritos has an all-weather
track. “I run better on an all-weather track. My times are better on these
types of surfaces,” remarked Fred. “When in the starting blocks, he thinks
about the drive of his arms. My arms must be strong and smooth.”
The night before the meet he sleeps from eight-10 hours, and loads up
with health foods. In order to make the finals on Saturday, he must run
at least third in his heat. If there is a tie, the final position will
be determined by time. His times of 10.57 and 21.39 also set records at
Yosemite High.
This week Fred and Coach Vaughn will be working on speed. The community
wishes Fred good luck.
