After
the official ceremonies are over, seniors from Yosemite High School will
be granted a free night of entertainment, games and prizes. And all that
is required of the students is that they remain sober for the entire evening.
This year’s event will be hosted at the Oakhurst bowling alley with the
event starting at 9 p.m. and ending the next morning at 5 a.m. No one
will be admitted after midnight, and if anyone leaves the event, they
will not be readmitted. Activities will include bowling, three hours of
free video games, contests, food, cash and the grand prize: a 1990 Toyota
Camry donated by Marty and Lela Mayfohrt from Madera Auto. If students
want to bring a guest, the cost is $20 per guest. The guest must be accompanied
by the student the night of the event.
The expected attendance for this year’s event is 200-250 students according
to Linda Heinbach, Sober Grad coordinator and YHS instructor.
Ms. Heinbach got involved in this annual event nine years ago when continuance
of the event was in question. “There is not not going to be a sober grad
night,” she stated, and the rest is history. Ms. Heinbach has requested
that more prizes are needed for the event, and the prizes that have been
donated are being displayed in her classroom. She said that when the prizes
come in she shows them to various students to encourage them to attend
the event. Ms. Heinbach also requests that the parents encourage their
children to attend.
More volunteers are needed to help during the event. Ms. Heinbach commented
that “a lot of staff is involved...our school crew does a lot for the
school.” But more people are needed to make the evening a success. If
anyone is interested in helping, please contact Ms. Heinbach at 683-4667
ext. 221.
