MADERA — The
Yosemite FFA once again proved their excellence at this year’s Madera
District Fair held Sept. 1-7.
An amazing 18 students from the Yosemite FFA Chapter showed animals
ranging from pigs, goats, and sheep to steers. Competing against
numerous schools from throughout the county, FFA members were successful
in every division entered.
In the sheep category Bridget Olsten won Commercial Cross FFA Champion,
and placed second in Advanced Showmanship. Aimee Barigian won her
class of Middle Weight FFA Lamb. Taylor Williamson won Reserve Champion
Hampshire FFA, and placed third in the Rate of Gain category. Don
Blackstock placed first in both the Heavy Weight Market Class, and
the Novice Showmanship Class. Also showing was Rachael Olsten with
her breeding sheep, where she took “place” in Breeding Champion.
Also showing were Amy Rorhig, and Kaiti Sirnms who both did a terrific
job with their sheep.
Four students from the Yosemite FFA showed swine at the Madera Fair.
Hollie Shreve placed second in Market class, and seventh in Advanced
Showmanship, followed by Kristin Lukan in eighth place in the same
class. Travis Ecklund placed first in Intermediate Showmanship and
placed fourth in his Market class. Additionally, Rachel Olsten placed
seventh in the Intermediate Showmanship class and placed second
in her Market class.
Showing goats this year, were Kimberley Youman and Ashley Vetter.
Youman placed second in the Advanced Showmanship and third in her
Market class, and Ashley Vetter placed fourth in Advanced Showmanship
and second in her Market class.
In the steer category the Yosemite FFA did a remarkable job. Heather
Plumb won Outstanding Beef Exhibiter and FFA Champion Steer. Castin
Ecklund won Reserve FFA Champion, and took first place in Intermediate
Showmanship. Nick Ricker placed first in Novice Showmanship, and
seventh in his Market class.
The Yosemite FFA performed remarkably well by having four of its
members participate in the Round Robin, where the students who placed
first in their showmanship class go on to show not only their own
particular species of animal but also all other show species including
goat, swine, steer, dairy cow, sheep, and horse.
Kimberley Youman and Heather Plumb did a fantastic job in the Advanced
Round Robin and placed second and third respectively. Travis Ecklund
and Castin Ecklund also did exceptionally well in Intermediate Round
Robin by taking third and fourth place respectively.
A big thank you goes out to all the parents providing support to
the FFA members throughout the week. Another big thanks goes out
to all the individuals and businesses that purchased animals at
the auction on Saturday, September 6.
