Robert Ratchford and Ashley Newton rehearse for Yosemite High School’s production of “Born Yesterday.”

New Theater Arts teacher Lars Thorson is bringing a full schedule of events to Yosemite High School (YHS). His goal is to offer a wide variety of theatrical experiences for the students to participate in and for the community to enjoy.

The YHS Theater Arts Department opened its season with Arthur Miller’s drama, “The Crucible.” The play examined the Salem witch trials and focused on intolerance towards others, mob hysteria and words as weapons. The play generated positive feedback in the community and was featured on KSEE-TV.

Six YHS seniors completed their senior projects directing, producing and playing prominent roles in William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This fantastic comedy featured lovers, fairies and much merriment and played in late February/early March. Also, two YHS students, Kyle Stivers and Keralyn Davi, will be presenting “Stage Favorites” as their senior project Friday-Sunday [March 28-30] at Golden Chain Theatre in Oakhurst.

Coming up next is the spring play, Garson Kanin’s classic American comedy “Born Yesterday.” The play tells the story of an ex-chorus girl, Billie Dawn, who lacks social graces but understands the ways of the world. Her vulgar millionaire boyfriend hires someone to teach her refinement, but she learns much more than just good manners. The sparkling comedy performs Fridays and Saturdays, April 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m.

The YHS Theater Arts Department will travel to Sutter Creek to participate in the Mother Lode Drama Festival Friday through Sunday, April 25-27. Ten students will compete in three categories including solo acting, duet acting and will present the one-act play, “Canadian Gothic.”

Finally, students from all theater arts classes will present work during the One Act Festival on Friday and Saturday, May 16, 17 at 7 p.m. These one-act plays will represent the best productions from the five Theater Arts classes offered at YHS. All performances will be at the YHS Theater, Room 700, on the YHS Campus.

For more information or tickets, please call Lars Thorson at 683-4667, extension 256.
