Chase McCabe and Yosemite High School Head Counselor Valinda Clevenger look over the program for the National Youth Leadership Forum Chase will attend in February.

Chase McCabe, a junior at Yosemite High School, has been selected to participate in The National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. for a week in February.

The program allows participants to explore the fields of national security, diplomacy and other related career opportunities. Chase hopes to pursue a medical career in the military after graduating from YHS. YHS Counselor Valinda Clevenger nominated him for the forum. She remembers him telling her when he was in the eighth grade that he wanted a career in the military. “It takes someone who wants to go into the field to benefit from this opportunity,” she says.

Chase, who is YHS junior class president, says he is “really excited” about the opportunity to attend the forum. Four other students from YHS have attended in the past; Brittany Stafford-Castillo, Forrest Martin, Sarah Vining and Drew Pence.

To be eligible to attend the forum, a student must be a high school junior or senior with academic promise, leadership potential and a strong interest in defense, intelligence and diplomacy. Among the speakers at the 2004 forum will be George J. Tenet, director of Central Intelligence; Marc Grossman, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs; and Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr., US Navy (Ret.), who was US ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1994-97 and was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1985-89.

Senate galleries, Arlington National Cemetery, Smithsonian Museums, and the various memorials in Washington. There will be programs on Public Policy and Our Nation's Security, Implementing Security Policy, National Security in Action, and Strategic Decision Making.During the course of the six days, students will participate in a real world national security exercise simulation. There is a long history of military service in Chase's family. Both of his grandfathers served in the military and his paternal great grandfather was a rear admiral in the US Navy. Chase is the son of Bill and Paula McCabe of Ahwahnee.
