Speakers announced for May 18 Relay for Life event
Twelve speakers have
been scheduled to participate in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life to
be held on Saturday, May 18, at the Yosemite High School track.
There will be
presentations every half hour from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The public is welcome
to attend any or all of the presentations whether they participate in the Relay
or not says Susan McBride of Coarsegold, chairman for the speakers.
Scheduled to speak
are:
9 a.m. — John McBride,
an Oakhurst physician specializing in family practice for 20 years, will talk
about diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
9:30 a.m. — David Tashjian,
a dermatologist in Fresno for more than 20 years, will speak about skin cancer,
prevention, signs and symptoms, and treatment.
10 a.m. — Klaus Hoffmann,
an oncologist in Fresno for more than 20 years, will talk about lung cancer,
its prevention and treatment.
10:30 a.m. — Kathy Villareall, is a health educator and medical assistant in the offices of
physicians William Schiff, Gil Dale and H. Gregory Rainwater, urologists in
Fresno. She will talk about prostate cancer.
11 a.m. — Michael Moffett or William Jawien specialists in internal medicine and medical oncology, at
the California Cancer Center, will talk about uterine cancer.
11:30 a.m. — Rabia Parveez,
internal medicine specialist and medical oncologist at California Cancer Center
in Fresno will talk about breast health and breast cancer.
1 p.m. — Annie Dennis,
a local resident who is a registered nurse working at Children's Hospital of
Central California, will discuss childhood leukemia, lymphoma, its signs,
symptoms and treatment.
1:30 p.m. — Kristi Cooper,
registered nurse at Children's Hospital of Central California, will talk about
childhood cancers, signs, symptoms and treatments.
2 p.m. — Maryann Campbell,
registered dietitian from St. Agnes Hospital, will talk about eating hints for
cancer patients, before, during and after treatment.
2:30 p.m. David Klinginsmith, chaplain at St. Agnes, will speak about psychosocial
issues related to cancer diagnosis.
As chaplain, he
counsels cancer patients and their families.
3 p.m. — Joan Helm
is a registered nurse who will address home health care.
3:30 p.m. — Registered nurse Chris Ortiz, Ph.D., is an instructor at California State University, Fresno.
She will talk about hospice care and comfort measures for patients.
The third annual
Eastern Madera County Relay for Life will herald its beginning with an opening
ceremony on Saturday, May 18.
The survivors will
begin the first lap of the 24-hour event at 9 a.m. The Relay will end at 9 a.m.
Sunday, May 19. Mountain Area community members are encouraged to take part in
this important event.
