Stephanie
Miller presents her favorite quilt to Pat Johnson of Project Linus. The stack
of 23 quilts made by Miss Miller is on the table ready to be delivered to
Children's Hospital Central California.
A Yosemite High School student's
senior project will warm the hearts and bodies of 23 young patients at
Children's Hospital Central California (formerly called Valley Children's
Hospital).
Stephanie Miller learned to sew
and then made 23 quilts to donate to Project Linus, which, in turn, will donate
them to the hospital to be given to patients. The hospital may also give some
of the quilts to children at Rotary House, which is part of the hospital in
Madera County.
Stephanie said she enjoyed the
project so much she is now making herself a Senior Memories quilt.
One of the requirements for the
Project Linus quilts is that they be new, handmade and washable. Stephanie was
assisted by women from her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints.
The material for the quilts was
donated by the church, and some of the women joined her for two quilting
potlucks to tie the quilts.
The local chapter coordinator for
Project Linus is retired YHS teacher Pat Johnson of Bass Lake.
She accepted the quilts from
Stephanie last week and will deliver them, along with approximately 100 more,
to the hospital in the near future.
Mrs. Johnson said she is very
impressed with Stephanie and the effort she put into the community service
portion of her senior project. “These blankets are just wonderful,” Mrs. Johnson
said. “They will comfort children for years to come.”
The children get to keep the
blankets when they leave the hospital.
Stephanie said she was inspired
to make the quilts after reading about Project Linus in the Sierra Star.
