‘Coats for Kids’ is Yosemite Senior’s project

Yosemite High School student Kahlin Wolf decided to get involved in the Salvation Army’s “Coats for Kids” campaign as her senior project.

She has prepared and distributed flyers to encourage people to donate good, used coats they no longer need. She also lists the following locations where she has placed receptacles for coats:

Coarsegold Market, Heidi’s One-Hour Photo, The Center, Oakhurst Feed, Miller’s Mountain Sports, Clayber Coffee, Oakhurst Branch Library, Yosemite High School, Oak Creek Intermediate, Oakhurst, Wasuma, Coarsegold and Rivergold elementary schools, and Mountain Fence.

Coats for Kids is an organization that helps keep kids, whose winters are otherwise cold, warm by giving them new or used donated coats. After the coats have been dropped off at a sponsor location, the Salvation Army picks them up and separates them into two categories: new and used. New coats go on the rack and used coats get sent for dry cleaning. Once cleaned, they go on the rack to be distributed.

Kahlin has challenged the students at YHS to make a competition out of the coat drive, with each class trying to collect the most coats for points. Freshmen will be able to drop off coats in their English classes and sophomores through seniors can drop them off in their social science classes.

“There is also a drop-off point in the office, for general use,” said Kahlin.

Requests for coats must come from a school nurse or counselor, so contact your child’s school if they are in need of a coat. Once they refer you, call The Salvation Army at 683-6653 or 233-0138 to set up an appointment.
