Alexander Cano, winner of the recent Student Speakers Contest in Madera, enjoys a moment with Bass Lake Lions Club members Emil and Bettie Paul. Alexander will now advance to the District Level.

The regional level of the Student Speakers Contest was recently won by Alexander Cano, a sophomore at Yosemite High School (YHS).

Before advancing to the regional level, Alexander won the Bass Lake Club Speaker Contest and the Zone Level Contest.

The regional contest, sponsored by the Lions Club, was held in Madera. Alexander competed against zone winners from the Madera-Chowchilla-Le Grand-Dos Palos and Merced area. He received cash awards for winning at each of the three contests.

On Saturday, April 20, he will proceed to Santa Rosa to compete at the District Level where the winner will reap a $4,000 scholarship and a chance to advance to the Area Level Contest.

This is the 65th year the Lions Clubs of California and Nevada have sponsored the Student Speakers Contest. This year’s speech topic is “Energy — What’s the Future?”

Alexander is a peer mediator at YHS and has a 4.3 grade-point average. He also plays junior varsity basketball and baseball.
