Registration open for Yosemite Adult Education

 

Yosemite Adult Education will offer a wide variety of classes during the Fall 2002 semester. Schedules are available on the Yosemite Joint Union High School District web site at www.yosemiteuhsd.com

Mail-in registration is in progress now. Walk-in registration begins Wednesday, August 28, at 4 p.m. Adult Education office hours are Monday and Wednesday, 6-9 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 1-4 p.m. The office is located on the YHS campus.

The following classes will be offered beginning Tuesday [September 3]

 

Effective Retirement Solutions — 6-8 p.m., room 23; cost is $35. This six-week workshop is designed for individuals seeking effective solutions pertaining to retirement planning options, current tax relief issues, long term care awareness, college savings plans, company plan distributions as well as estate planning.

Topics include the California Partnership, 529s, simple and Simplified Employee Pension [SEP] Individual Retirement Accounts [IRA]. Ways to avoid common investing pitfalls will also be discussed.

 

Chi-Tu-Do, 6-8 p.m. — Tuesday and Thursday in the weight room at YHS; cost is $60. This is a 10-week course taught by credentialed black-belt instructors and masters.

A spokesman says this self-defense class will improve a person's flexibility, stamina, cardiovascular condition and coordination. The self-defense techniques are described as something that anyone of any age can learn and that are good for women's self-defense.

 Four different types of martial arts will be taught: Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Escrima and Kung Fu. Students will work with weapons, learn competition level sparring, heaving bags, breaking and target work and on-the-ground self-defense.

 

Cabinetmaking/wood — 6:30-9:30 p.m.; cost is $25. This is a course in basic woodworking that teaches cutting, ripping, planing and assembling while working on a project of the students' choice.

 

Beginning Adobe Photography: Photoshop 7.0 — , 6-9 p.m., computer lab 32; cost is $30. This five-week course is beginning level Digital Photography Photoshop but is not for the novice computer user. The class will help students to know the work area, work with selections, learn layer basics, learn painting and editing and work with Masks and Channels.

 

Jump Start Office 2000 — 6-9 p.m., computer lab 31; cost is $30. This eight-week class will concentrate on using all of the programs in Office 2000. The class will consist of two weeks of Word, two weeks of Excel, two weeks of Access and two weeks of Power Point. This class is recommended for the beginning student.

 

The following classes start Wednesday, September 4:

 

Investing in Difficult Times — 6-8 p.m., room 23 at YHS; cost is $40. Students will learn about investment options including certificates of deposit, bonds, mutual funds, stocks, Individual Retirement Accounts, 401K and annuities. The advantages and disadvantages of each investment will be explained in easy-to-understand language with examples.

 

Introduction to PC — 6-9 p.m., computer lab 32 at YHS; cost is $15. This class for the beginner will include how to turn on the computer, how to use the mouse and the computer.

 

Country Western Line Dancing — Starts September 11 at the Oakhurst Sierra Senior Center from 9:30-11 a.m.; cost is $25.

This is a class for anyone interested in dancing. Students should wear leather-soled shoes and comfortable clothes. Cowboy boots are not necessary.

 

These classes start Thursday, September 5:

 

Art I - Drawing and Color/Beginning and Intermediate — 9-11 a.m. at the Oakhurst Sierra Senior Center; cost is $72. Students will learn basic concepts in drawing and brush up on their skills.

 Using both traditional and unusual tools, the class will cover approaches to landscape, still life, portraiture and abstract. The last four or five weeks will focus on drawing in color.

Classes will meet indoors and also in nearby outside locations. There will be an all-day class field trip to draw in Yosemite National Park.

Students are to take a sketchbook and pencil to the first class meeting. Materials list will be handed out the first day of class. The class is limited to 15 students.

 

Art I - New Dimen­sions/­Advanced — Oakhurst Sierra Senior Center, 1-3 p.m.; cost is $72. This class is for the artist who already knows the basics and is not for beginners.

The class will use the works of the masters to learn composition, color use and style.

Through a series of exercises designed to analyze various artists' techniques, students can then apply what they have learned to their own painting.

Works studied will be done in various media. Students can work in watercolor or pastel. An overnight field trip to San Francisco to look at art in the Bay Area will be part of the class, but is not required. Students will work indoors and outdoors. Material lists will be handed out the first day of class. The class is limited to 15 students.

 

PC Repair and Construction — 6-9 p.m. in computer lab 32; cost is $30. This six-week course will focus on diagnosis, trouble shooting and construction techniques used to repair and build a computer. Students will be allowed to build or upgrade a computer.

 

These classes start Monday, September 9:

 

Community Band — 6:30-8:30; cost is $25. This class is designed to develop instrumental skills to a level where an individual could perform in a community band. Participants should provide their own instruments.

 

Using Quickbooks Professional — 6-9 p.m., computer lab 31; cost is $30. This is an accounting software designed to run small to medium size companies.

During this five-week class, students will learn to set up a company, how to process payroll, pay quarterly taxes, pay vendors, write journal entries and use the report writer to generate various reports.

 

Beginning Adobe Premier — 6.0; 6-9 p.m., computer lab 32; cost is $30. This five-week class will teach students to use this professional video editing tool. They will get to know the work area, they will learn about video editing, basic editing, adding transitions and adding audio.

 

Prepared Childbirth Education — Begins Monday, September 16, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Evergreen High School on Road 427; cost is $55 per couple.

This five-week course includes physical and emotional preparation for birth including comfort measures, breathing and relaxation.

Newborn care, breast-feeding and cesarean birth are also covered. Review couples are welcome. Participants are to wear comfortable clothing and take two pillows and a blanket.

 

The following classes start Saturday, September 14:

 

Introduction to the Internet — 9 a.m. - noon, computer lab 32; cost is $15. The class will teach students about the Internet: how to get there and what to do once they are on-line. They will learn about e-mail and how to search for a certain topic.

 

Emergency Medical Technician [EMT] Basic — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at YHS; cost is $125. This class prepares the student for certification as an EMT I. A ride-along ambulance program and emergency room observation section is added to this course for certification purposes.

Twelve labs are available throughout the course on Wednesday nights; students are required to attend four lab classes. The fee includes textbook, workbook and lab required for the class.

 

The following classes will be held at Foothill High School on Yosemite Springs Parkway in Coarsegold starting Tuesday, September 10:

 

Beginning Word — 6-9 p.m.; cost is $30. This three-week course covers the features of Word, which is a word processing software. Week one will cover the basics of Word, the second week will cover beginning formatting and week three covers advanced formatting. This is a basic course for those with no computer experience.
