Students in the International Baccalaureate Psychology class at Yosemite High School received art lessons this year as part of a cross-curricular project through a Fine Arts Grant.

YHS art instructor Rivka Schaffner gave the psychology students art lessons and a lecture on women in art.

With the art instruction they received, combined with their knowledge of psychology, the students created a piece of art that will be donated to the local domestic violence shelter, Laurel House.

Each student involved in the project created a small piece of art on a tile. Surrounding the art were the student’s name, what they love, what they fear and what they give to society. Incorporated within the artwork are the student’s attributes.

“This is a work of hope,” says Deborah Brown, psychology instructor. “We want the people in the shelter to know there is a better life, with help. There is hope.”

Ms. Schaffner took photographs of all of the students who participated in the project and put them at the top of the piece, which is called Unique as Individuals - United as Women.
