YHS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

10-12-00

Construction is underway on a bridge at Yosemite High School that will allow students and community members access to new parking areas that are also being built. The bridge will make it possible for a road to be built through the center of the campus, pulling most of the student traffic and parking off the main road and into the interior of the campus. "This will increase the safety of our students as they access and use the facilities," comments Yosemite Joint Union High School District Superintendent Bill McCabe. "These parking lots are also more conveniently placed in relation to facilities that would be accessed by either students or community members." These projects and others underway at YHS are financed by the general obligation bond approved by voters in 1998.

The parking area for Yosemite High School is being built in the area shown in the background of the following photograph. This parking lot will handle all of the parking on campus and will be closer to recreational fields and other areas of heavy community use. Trees were removed for this project, however over 600 native species are being planted to replace those that were removed. "One of our priorities is to maintain the natural esthetics of the area and to be environmentally conscious as we move forward with our project," Superintendent McCabe says.

The metal studs are being put into place on the cafeteria / multi-purpose room at Yosemite High School and the roof deck is going up. In approximately two weeks, the roof will be completed, allowing work to continue inside during the winter. Superintendent McCabe expects that the building will be completed by April 1 or before.

Twelve temporary portable buildings have been moved onto the Yosemite High School campus to be used until permanent classrooms are built. The portable buildings are located in one of the student parking areas and at other locations on the campus. The district has contracted with the state for the use of these portables.

Work is continuing on the remodeling and expansion of the shower / locker room at Yosemite High School. When completed, hopefully by mid-November, it will accommodate 1200 students. The old facility had room for 600. The remodeled facility will also have a team room.
