High School Interact
Yosemite High School Interact is a community and school service club
on campus. The club has been honored as Club of the Year six times
in the last 10 years.
Interact members participate in numerous activities and projects during
the school year.
Two favorite community service projects are the annual Easter Egg
Hunt for young children in the mountain area and funding a card-recycling
program that involves SPICE (Seniors Participating in Community Education)
volunteers and benefits Sierra Children’s Museum, according to Consuelo
Mercier, club advisor.
School service includes monthly craft parties with Special Friends
who are students in Lori Blate’s special education class.
International projects in-clude funding Rotaplast, a program sponsored
by Rotary that sends plastic surgeons to third world countries to
perform surgeries on children and adults with cleft lip and pallet.
New members are always welcome in Interact, Mercier says. Any student
interested in joining Interact can contact Mercier in the library
during the school day. The next meeting will be Monday, October 13,
at 7 p.m. in the YHS library.
YHS Interact officers for 2003-04 are Jessica Tucker, president; Janelle
Moylan, vice president; Karras Blate, secretary; Nikki Samuels, treasurer;
Taryn Porter, community outreach; Anna Larsen, school service and
Garrett Tompkins, international service.
Future
Business Leaders of America
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a program that strives
to introduce high school students to the business world. Currently,
there are about 12 members.
Throughout the year members attend conferences that show different
aspects of business. They also attend workshops.
At the end of the year chapters compete in various subjects related
to business. Last year the YHS club won many awards. After competing,
they attend a conference at Irvine and compete again. They also go
to Disneyland.
“FBLA gives students the opportunity to meet many new people and learn
a lot of new things and it is a lot of fun,” says member Tiffany Sellars.
Linda Robison is the advisor.
